Dirt Riders
8-week after school program introduces new riders (K– 5th grade) to the sport of mountain biking through singletrack riding on Open Space trails in Boulder.
This program is geared towards beginner mountain bikers in Kindergarten to 1st grade, who want to ride singletrack trails. Coaches help athletes learn skills to navigate trails safely and practice trail etiquette. Through enjoyable rides, athletes gain confidence, make friends, and explore Boulder trails. Each week, they practice basic skills like looking ahead, braking, shifting, balance, getting started, riding over obstacles, standing on pedals, and understanding trail etiquette and bike terminology.
Spring & Fall K-1

Mondays, 4:15pm - 6:15pm
Spring: March 31st - May 19th
Fall: Aug. 25th - Oct. 20th.
No rides on Labor Day

5 -7 years of age (K-1st grade)

Must be comfortable balancing and pedaling their bikes on a flat path or gravel surface prior to the first ride of the session.
Must be prepared to start the ride on time with a coach and the group; and stay with the coach and group for the duration of the ride.
Must be comfortable riding in a group with their coaches and other SMBA athletes; and ready to listen and follow coaches’ instructions during the ride.

20” wheel or larger trail ready bike in safe working condition with hand brakes, gears, and tires adequate for off road riding. (No coaster brakes)
Properly fit helmet in safe condition (No cracks, broken straps, or dents).
Comfortable hydration pack or backpack that can carry the following items: snacks, water, rain jacket, and an extra tube. We highly recommend a CamelBak type hydration pack with a built-in water reservoir and storage compartments.
Shoes with adequate tread (No sandals or Crocs).
Adequate water & snacks for the ride.
Tube (even if athlete has tubeless tires).
Rain jacket
Full Finger bike gloves
Sunglasses
Athlete must be prepared to ride in changing weather conditions. On cold days, they must bring an extra layer and warm gloves.

This is a meet at the trailhead program, and rides are at a different location each week.

This program is geared toward beginner mountain bikers in 2nd -5th grade who want to ride on singletrack trails. Coaches help participants develop skills for safely navigating various terrains and following trail etiquette.
Through fun afternoon rides with SMBA coaches and other participants, young riders build confidence, make friends, and explore Boulder’s trails. Each week, young athletes practice basic bike handling skills, such as looking ahead, braking, shifting, balancing, starting, riding over obstacles, standing on pedals, and understanding trail etiquette and bike terminology.
